  VA. Buds white with pink tips. Flowers openly funnel shaped, 1 V2" across x 1 %" long,

  with 5 + 5 (hose -in-hose), evenly rounded lobes, very slightly fragrant, white, with

  moderate pink 2.5 R 8/5 (Nickerson), Va- %" tips to corolla and calyx lobes. Calyx and

  corolla whorls are the same length. Flower cluster 3-flowered, about 2V2" x 2V2". Free

  flowering. Leaves held well through winter, 2.5 em. x 1.3 em., elliptic to narrowly

  obovate, flat, apiculate, cuneate, ciliate, top more hairy than under surface, moderate

  yellow green 5GY 5/6 to moderate olive green 5GY 4/3, some older leaves turn vivid

  white towards center, with light yellow green (142 C) throat and very light spotting of

  pink on dorsal lobe. There are 2 flowers/terminal. leaves are narrowly obovate, flat,

  mucronate, truncate (apex) and cuneate (base), 0.9" long x 0.2"-0.4" wide; glossy,

  substance, widely funnel-shaped, 2 ½" across x 1 8/5" long, with 5 + 5 (hose-in-hose)

  wavy to frilled lobes, white with very light green throat. Calyx 1 ½" long, colored as

  corolla. Inflorescence 1-2-flowered. Leaves held about a year (well through winter), 1" x

  ½", narrowly obovate to almost elliptic, apiculate, cuneate, flat to concave, glossy,

  Spinach Green o960 (H.C.C.), ciliate and both surfaces strigose. Plant broad, branching

  well with decumbent branches, full, 20" tall x 36" wide in 6 years. Blooms in late May,

  early June. Hardy to at least 5 F.

  

  

  'Purple Pansy': Elepidote. ('Janet Blair' x 'Purple Splendour'). H (1980): Dr Henry

  Schroeder, Evansville, IN =ARS Seed Lot 81-86 4); G (1985), N, I (c1989), and REG

  (1992): Sandra McDonald, Hampton, VA. Openly funnel-shaped flowers, with

  occasional petaloid stamens, have a slight fruity fragrance and are 3.1" across x 2" long

  with 5 frilly-edged lobes. They are moderate purple (82C) in bud, opening (82C) and

  fading to light purple (84C) with a very pale (nearly white) throat, and prominent dark

  purple (79A) blotch and spots on dorsal and parts of adjacent petals. The dome-shaped

  truss of 15 flowers is 5.9" wide x 4.3" high. The strong yellow green ( 143B) calyx is

  0.08" long. Leaves are narrowly obovate, flat, acute to broadly acute (apex) and cuneate

  (base), 4.5" long x 1 .75" wide, glossy, moderate olive green (147A) above, moderate

  yellow green (147B) below, and hairless. The shrub is moderately floriferous, has an

  upright habit, holds its leaves 1-2 years, and blooms mid May. It is 4.7' high x 3.2' wide
